In-ear monitor guide
Get the seal right.
If your in-ears sound thin, quiet or bass-light, the problem is usually the seal. A proper fit improves sound and lets you monitor at a lower volume.
Fit
Start with the cable over your ear.
- Check the left and right markings before inserting.
- Start with the medium silicone tip and insert with a slight twist.
- If the bass is thin and the room is still loud, move up a tip size.
- If there is pressure, soreness or the earpiece works loose, move down a size.
- It is normal to use a different tip size in each ear.
Check
Use the talk test.
With both earpieces in and nothing playing, your own voice should sound boomy and internal. If it sounds normal, the canal is not sealed yet.
- What if silicone will not seal?
- Try foam tips. They expand to fill ear canals that are difficult to seal with silicone.
- How loud should I set the monitor?
- Set the level with the full band playing. If you keep turning up, check the seal first.
- How should I look after them?
- Wipe the tips, keep wax out of the nozzle and coil the detachable cable loosely.
